Undulated Triggerfish (

Balistapus undulatus

)

The Undulated Triggerfish is a striking and highly recognizable marine species known for its vivid coloration and bold personality. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, including coral reefs of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific, this fish is especially admired for its intricate pattern of wavy, electric-blue lines layered over a dark green to orange body.

Growing up to around 30 cm (12 inches) in length, the Undulated Triggerfish has a robust, oval-shaped body and a powerful jaw equipped with sharp teeth, which it uses to feed on hard-shelled prey such as crustaceans and sea urchins. Its name comes from the distinctive “trigger” mechanism on its dorsal fin, which can lock into place to help the fish wedge itself securely into crevices for protection.

While undeniably beautiful, this species is also known for its aggressive and territorial nature, especially in captivity. It is best suited for experienced aquarists and should be housed alone or with carefully selected tank mates in a large, well-structured aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Vibrant blue, wavy line patterns across the body
  • Strong, beak-like teeth for crushing prey
  • Distinct dorsal “trigger” spine mechanism
  • Highly territorial and assertive behavior

The Undulated Triggerfish is a captivating addition to marine displays, combining bold aesthetics with fascinating behavior—ideal for those seeking a standout centerpiece species.
