The Threadfin Anthias — also known as the Carberryi Anthias — is a beautiful, active mid‑water reef fish that brings vibrant colour and elegant movement to larger marine aquariums. With its combination of yellow, orange, purple and iridescent tones and elongated dorsal/caudal filaments, this species adds dynamic life to open water column spaces above live rock.
Appearance:
Threadfin Anthias have a striking colour palette that varies between sexes — males often show more purple and intense shades, while females and juveniles tend toward warm yellow to orange tones. Both display delicate fin streamers that give them their “threadfin” look.
Behaviour & Social:
- Active and peaceful: a schooling species that thrives in groups (harem structure: one dominant male with several females/juveniles).
- Mid‑water swimmer: occupies open swimming zones, adding motion and life to the aquarium.
- Reef‑safe: suitable for reef tanks with corals and small invertebrates.
Care Level: Intermediate — requiring stable water quality, frequent feeding, and space.
Diet: Planktivore / carnivore — needs frequent small meals of zooplankton‑rich foods like enriched mysis, brine shrimp, and fine meaty foods throughout the day.
Tank Requirements:
- Minimum Tank Size: ~300 L+ (70+ gallons) for a single fish — larger systems are strongly recommended for groups.
- Water Parameters: Temp ~22–26 °C (72–78 °F), pH ~8.1–8.4, Salinity ~1.022–1.025.
- Environment: Open swimming space with live rock for rest/hiding; secure lid to prevent jumping.
Temperament: Peaceful — males may show mild territoriality toward other males if space is limited.
