The Acanthophyllia coral, often called the “Meat Coral” or “Doughnut Coral,” is a stunning large-polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its bold colors and dramatic, fleshy appearance. Known for its inflated, cushion-like form and vibrant patterns—ranging from deep reds to neon greens and multicolor swirls—this coral instantly becomes a centerpiece in any reef aquarium. Acanthophyllia are solitary corals, meaning each specimen grows as a single large polyp, often reaching impressive sizes when healthy and well-fed.

Care Requirements

Lighting:

Acanthophyllia thrive under low to moderate lighting. Too much light can cause fading or tissue recession, so placement on the sand bed or a shaded area is ideal.

Water Flow:

They prefer low, gentle flow that keeps their tissue moving softly. Strong currents can damage their delicate flesh.

Feeding:

While they rely on photosynthesis, Acanthophyllia benefit greatly from regular feeding. Offer meaty foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets 1–2 times per week to support growth and coloration.

Placement:

Place on soft substrate like sand to protect their tissue. Avoid contact with sharp rock edges or aggressive neighbors, as their large, fleshy body can be easily injured.

Temperament:

Peaceful and non-aggressive, though they require space to expand fully.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026
  • Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
