Rainbow Trachyphyllia Coral (also known as Rainbow Trachy or Open Brain Coral) is a stunning and highly sought-after species in the reef aquarium hobby, prized for its vibrant coloration and flowing, fleshy appearance.
Description:
Rainbow Trachyphyllia (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi) is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its wide, fleshy mantle that expands over a hard skeleton. The “rainbow” variation features an extraordinary blend of colors — typically radiating patterns of neon green, electric blue, fiery red, orange, and sometimes hints of yellow or purple. These colors often intensify under actinic (blue) lighting, making the coral appear to glow vividly.
Key Features:
- Shape: Dome-shaped or slightly concave with open, brain-like folds.
- Size: Can grow up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in diameter in captivity.
- Lighting: Moderate to low; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide with subdued intensity.
- Flow: Low to moderate water flow to prevent tissue damage and allow gentle swaying.
- Placement: Typically placed on the sandbed or flat rock in low-flow areas.
Care Level:
Moderate. Rainbow Trachys are hardy once acclimated but sensitive to sudden changes in lighting, flow, and water parameters. They benefit from occasional target feeding of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-specific blends.
Compatibility:
Generally peaceful, but they can extend sweeper tentacles at night. Best kept away from aggressive corals or those with long sweepers.
This coral adds an incredible pop of color to reef tanks and is considered a showpiece specimen due to its dramatic and eye-catching appearance.
