Resplendent Anthias (
Pseudanthias pulcherrimus
)
The Resplendent Anthias is a stunning and graceful reef fish prized for its vivid coloration and active schooling behavior. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, particularly around coral-rich reefs, this species thrives in deeper reef environments where it forms loose groups in open water above the reef.
Reaching sizes of up to 20 cm (8 inches), Pseudanthias pulcherrimus displays striking sexual dimorphism. Males are especially vibrant, showcasing a blend of pink, orange, and magenta hues with elongated fin extensions, while females tend to be smaller and more subtly colored in shades of orange to peach.
Known for their constant movement and mid-water swimming, Resplendent Anthias add energy and color to any large reef aquarium. However, they are best suited to experienced aquarists due to their specific care requirements. They require frequent feeding of small, high-quality foods such as zooplankton substitutes and benefit from strong water flow and ample swimming space.
Key Features:
- Brilliant pink, orange, and magenta coloration (especially in males)
- Active, schooling behavior in the water column
- Displays clear sexual dimorphism
- Requires frequent feeding and a well-established aquarium
While slightly more demanding than some reef fish, the Resplendent Anthias rewards proper care with breathtaking color and lively presence, making it a standout addition to advanced marine systems.
