The Dwarf Fuzzy Lionfish, also known as the Hawaiian Lionfish or Shortfin Lionfish, is a smaller, more manageable relative of the classic Volitans Lionfish. Its distinctive fuzzy, tentacle-like fins and striking red, white, and brown banding make it a popular choice for aquarists who want the beauty of a lionfish without the large size.
Description:
Unlike its larger cousins, the Dwarf Fuzzy Lionfish rarely exceeds 15 cm (6 in) in length, making it suitable for medium-sized marine tanks. It is a slow-moving ambush predator that feeds primarily on small crustaceans and fish. Its ornate fins and calm swimming style add both elegance and interest to an aquarium display.
Key Features:
- Small, compact size with distinctive “fuzzy” fin extensions
- Ornate red, white, and brown banding
- Predatory but manageable for medium-sized tanks
- Reef-incompatible – will eat small invertebrates and fish
- Venomous spines – handle with care
Care Level: Intermediate
Diet: Carnivore – frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, small crustaceans, and chopped seafood
Minimum Tank Size: 40+ gallons (150+ litres)
Temperament: Solitary ambush predator
